Following from their success in London last year, the Caribbean Cultural Awareness Summer Camp programme will be hosted in Wales on Sunday July 29th at the Memorial Hall, Gladstone Road, Barry CF62 8NA. The day will comprise of two sessions; Cultural Workshops in the morning session from 10:30 am - 2:00 pm and a Cultural Concert in the afternoon from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm.
This unique event will offer the opportunity for young people to experience Caribbean Culture through the performing arts; dance, music, speech and drama. They will learn about the lives of great Jamaicans, including Mary Seacole, Bob Marley, Sam Sharpe, Nanny of the Maroons and Marcus Garvey; experience traditional folk dance such as Kumina, Dinky Mini, Revival, Ska through to modern day dance and hear the poems of Claude McKay and Louise Bennett.
The programme will be delivered by a team of experienced performing arts educators and practitioners from Jamaica.
The evening concert will be filled with music, song and dance, demonstrating the cultural activities of the morning workshops and include performances by young people from the London Summer Camp.
